The “Black Women Are Essential” (BWAE) merchandise came from two black women and friends, Essence Smith of ELMS Events and Chelsey Carter of Alex Carter Brand.

In response to COVID-19 and their interest in looking to support Black female essential workers during these unprecedented times, on May 25, 2020, Essence and Chelsey launched the first BWAE shirt in order to raise funds to provide BWAE kits to 50 Black female essential workers across the Chicagoland area. These BWAE kits included PPE, Luster Hair care products, self-care items such as shea butter, candles and an affirmation card, as well as a Target gift card + so much more…all from black-owned businesses!

The shirts sold out in a day.

They re-launched the shirts at a later date but this time a portion of the proceeds went to Breonna Taylor’s family and organizations that focus on providing direct support services for Black girls and Black women. With each release the growth increases. BWAE is now an International brand with a broadened audience and a stronger impact.

Chelsey & Essence are so grateful for their customers who have supported the brand so far and are looking forward to spreading the message louder and further that Black Women Are indeed Essential.

Enjoy! xo
